Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 44 (RPSAP44) is a processed pseudogene belonging to the multicopy RPSA gene family. Unlike the functional ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA), which codes for the 37/67-kDa laminin receptor involved in ribosome function, cell adhesion, and tumor metastasis, RPSAP44 does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes of RPSA have been catalogued in several species, but their transcripts are generally nonfunctional and there is no evidence that RPSAP44 plays a role in biological processes or disease[5]. Key distinction: All major biological and clinical roles, as well as drug interactions, relate to the *functional* RPSA gene (ribosomal protein SA or 37/67-kDa laminin receptor), not its pseudogenes[1][3][5]. The RPSAP44 pseudogene name designates a non-coding, likely nonfunctional sequence, and should not be confused with its functional homolog. If you are investigating drug targets, RPSAP44 should be excluded as it does not code for a protein and lacks evidence of function or involvement in therapeutic mechanisms[5].
