Overview

Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 48 (RPSAP48) is a pseudogene within the RPSA multicopy family. Pseudogenes are generally non-functional DNA sequences derived from functional genes by duplications or retrotranspositions. Unlike the parent ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA), which encodes a multifunctional protein implicated in ribosome assembly and cell surface interactions (especially as a laminin receptor), RPSAP48 is not known to encode any protein or possess any well-characterized biological or therapeutic function. Most RPSA pseudogenes are thought to have arisen from retrotranspositional events, and there is no evidence that RPSAP48 acts as a druggable receptor, enzyme, or transporter[3][7][5]. Some RPSA pseudogenes may be transcribed and could possibly act as regulatory RNAs, but definitive data for RPSAP48 specifically are lacking[7]. The main functional RPSA gene is linked to cancer and other diseases, but these roles do not extend to the pseudogene RPSAP48 unless future research reveals non-coding regulatory activities.
