Target intelligence / Profile preview

Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 61 (RPSAP61)

Target
RPSAP61
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene), Not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor
01

Overview

RPSAP61 is a nonfunctional pseudogene which belongs to the family of ribosomal protein SA pseudogenes. The functional RPSA gene encodes 40S ribosomal protein SA, a protein with essential cellular functions including participation as part of the ribosome, acting as a cell surface receptor for laminin and other ligands, and involvement in cancer and infectious disease processes. However, RPSAP61 does not encode a functional protein owing to premature stop codons or absence of essential coding regions. Pseudogenes like RPSAP61 are generally not considered therapeutic targets and have no established biological or clinical relevance. Their presence can interfere with genetic studies or complicate molecular analyses due to high sequence similarity with the functional genes.
