Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 73 (abbreviated as RPSAP73) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome. It is related by sequence similarity to the functional ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA), which encodes a protein component of the ribosome small subunit and also acts as a cell surface laminin receptor. However, as a pseudogene, RPSAP73 does not appear to encode a functional protein and lacks known biological activity or a role as a therapeutic target. There is no evidence linking this particular pseudogene to disease processes, drug interaction, or utility as a biomarker. Most references to "ribosomal protein SA" involve its parent gene (RPSA) rather than this pseudogene variant. Pseudogenes like RPSAP73 are essentially non-functional genomic sequences, generally considered “dead” copies of genes that arose from duplication or retrotransposition but acquired mutations that prevent them from producing functional proteins. They are distinct from their protein-coding parent genes, which may be important in biology or therapeutics (e.g., ribosomal protein SA, encoded by RPSA, involved in protein synthesis and acts as a laminin receptor in cancer), but pseudogenes themselves are not considered direct drug targets or receptors.
