Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 8 (RPSAP8) is a processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA), also known as laminin receptor 1. RPSAP8 does not encode a functional protein and is generally regarded as a genomic relic without known biological activity[1][3]. Pseudogenes like RPSAP8 may retain sequence similarity to their parent genes and occasionally contain regulatory elements but typically lack the ability to encode full-length functional proteins due to mutations or truncations[1][5]. In the case of ovine (sheep) models, RPSAP8 carries a segment corresponding to small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) SNORA62, though sequence mutations likely render this region nonfunctional[5]. Its primary significance is as a potential confounder in molecular biology experiments, particularly assays (such as PCR) that can non-specifically amplify high-homology pseudogenes alongside the functional gene[5].
