Ribosomal protein SA pseudogene 8 (RPSAP8) is a processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein SA gene (RPSA), also known as laminin receptor 1. RPSAP8 does not encode a functional protein and is generally regarded as a genomic relic without known biological activity[1][3]. Its primary significance is as a potential confounder in molecular biology experiments, particularly assays (such as PCR) that can non-specifically amplify high-homology pseudogenes alongside the functional gene[5]. No evidence supports the use of RPSAP8 as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or drug-interacting protein, nor are there known safety concerns associated with its (non-)functionality[1][3][5]. Key notes: - RPSAP8 is not a protein-coding gene, target, or receptor. - Its main biological relevance is in genomic annotation and ensuring molecular assays distinguish between the core RPSA gene and related pseudogenes[5]. - Some pseudogenes in the RPSA family in other species are transcribed and may participate in noncoding regulatory networks, but such functions have not been described for RPSAP8 in humans[5][1].
