The 23S ribosomal RNA (23S rRNA) is a fundamental component of the large subunit (50S) of prokaryotic ribosomes. It plays a central role in the structure and function of the ribosome, particularly in catalyzing peptide bond formation during protein synthesis. Many antibiotics target bacterial protein synthesis by binding to specific regions within 23S rRNA—especially near its peptidyl transferase center—to inhibit peptide bond formation or block elongation steps. Mutations conferring resistance often map to these antibiotic-binding sites.
