The ribosome is a complex molecular machine found in all living cells, responsible for synthesizing proteins by translating the genetic information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA). It is composed of two subunits, each consisting of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and numerous ribosomal proteins. Ribosomes translate mRNA sequences into polypeptide chains by linking amino acids together according to codon order specified by mRNA. Many antibiotics target bacterial ribosomes due to structural differences from eukaryotic counterparts, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
