Ribosome biogenesis protein BOP1 (BOP1) is a highly conserved nucleolar protein that forms a core component of the PeBoW complex (with PES1 and WDR12) essential for maturation of the 60S ribosomal subunit in eukaryotic cells[1]. BOP1 contains a unique N-terminal domain and multiple WD40 repeats, and localizes mainly to the nucleolus, where it directly associates with pre-ribosomes. Loss or dysregulation of BOP1 impairs rRNA processing, reduces cell proliferation, causes cell cycle arrest (particularly at the G1/S checkpoint), and may contribute to chromosomal instability and cancer development[1]. In plants and animals, deficiency in BOP1 or its partners leads to severe growth defects, supporting its key role in cell growth and survival[1].
