Ribosome biogenesis protein C1orf109 (AIRIM) is a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein involved in the cytoplasmic maturation steps of pre-60S ribosomal particles, specifically by promoting the release of shuttling factors required for ribosome assembly[9][4][1]. It acts together with other factors like SPATA5, SPATA5L1, and CINP to coordinate late steps of large ribosomal subunit biogenesis[2]. Loss of C1orf109 impairs 60S ribosomal subunit maturation, disrupts global protein synthesis, and is associated with the appearance of abnormal polysomes indicative of ribosome assembly defects[2][4]. C1orf109 is not a classical pharmacological target (e.g., receptor, enzyme), nor are there known drugs or direct disease associations outside of ribosome biogenesis defects[2][9]. It is evolutionarily conserved and may interact with other proteins involved in DNA replication and ribosome maturation[2]. It is located in the cytosol, nucleus, and nucleolus[9]. The gene is also known as FLJ20508 and AFG2-interacting ribosome maturation factor, among others.
