Overview

Ribulose-5-phosphate-3-epimerase pseudogene 1 (RPEP1) is a processed pseudogene similar in sequence to the functional ribulose-5-phosphate 3-epimerase gene (RPE). Pseudogenes such as RPEP1 do not encode active proteins and do not serve known biological or pharmacological functions. RPEP1 is thus not considered a therapeutic target. In contrast, the functional ribulose-5-phosphate 3-epimerase (RPE) is a key enzyme in the pentose phosphate pathway and the Calvin cycle, but these functions do not apply to RPEP1 as a pseudogene. RPEP1 is a pseudogene, not an active enzyme or therapeutic target. The actual enzyme with biological function is ribulose-5-phosphate 3-epimerase, encoded by the RPE gene. RPEP1 does not have biological, druggable, or disease-related roles.
