Ricin A chain (RTA) is the enzymatically active subunit of the ricin toxin. It functions as an N-glycoside hydrolase, depurinating ribosomal RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis, leading to cell death. While highly toxic in the context of the holotoxin, isolated RTA is being explored for targeted cancer therapy as an immunotoxin payload due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis without efficient cellular uptake, mitigating its overall toxicity.
