Rift Valley fever virus glycoprotein Gc (Gc)

Target
Gc
Molecular classification
Viral fusion protein, Structural protein, Class II fusion glycoprotein
01

Overview

Rift Valley fever virus glycoprotein Gc is a structural envelope glycoprotein encoded by the M segment of the RVFV genome[8][3][6]. Gc, together with Gn, is essential for virus assembly and mediates viral attachment and membrane fusion with the host cell, a process activated by low pH in endosomes following endocytosis[2][6][7]. Structural studies demonstrate that Gc is a class II viral fusion protein, sharing architecture with fusion proteins from flaviviruses and alphaviruses, and undergoes an acid-triggered conformational change critical for membrane fusion[2][5][7]. Gc is the principal effector of viral entry and a major target for neutralizing antibodies, making it a key focus for the development of vaccines and antiviral therapeutics[1][8]. Gc is glycosylated and forms heterodimers with Gn, contributing to the quaternary structure and antigenicity of the viral particle[1][3][5].
