Overview

The right atrium is one of the four chambers of the heart, serving as the upper right chamber. It receives deoxygenated blood from the systemic circulation (via superior and inferior vena cavae) and the coronary sinus, directing it through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle for subsequent pumping to the lungs. Beyond its role as a blood reservoir and conduit, it is crucial for cardiac electrical conduction, housing the sinus node (the heart's primary pacemaker) and transmitting electrical signals to the atrioventricular node. Key anatomical features include the Eustachian and Thebesian valves. As an anatomical structure, the right atrium itself is not a molecular or receptor drug target; however, its vital physiological function means it is implicated in various cardiac diseases like atrial fibrillation and amyloidosis.
