Overview

The **right ventricular outflow tract** (RVOT) is the muscular channel extending from the main cavity of the right ventricle to the pulmonary valve and artery, serving as the exit pathway for blood from the right ventricle into the pulmonary circulation. The RVOT has complex three-dimensional anatomy, with a distinctive fiber arrangement and is a critical site in congenital heart disease surgeries (such as repair of tetralogy of Fallot) and electrophysiological disease (site of origin for many idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias as well as Brugada syndrome). RVOT pathology—including post-surgical changes—can lead to hemodynamic compromise, arrhythmogenesis, and long-term right ventricular dysfunction.

02

Biological functions

Conduction of blood from right ventricle to pulmonary arteryKey locale for origination of certain ventricular arrhythmias
03

Disease associations

Cardiovascular disease (especially congenital heart disease, right ventricular dysplasia, pulmonary hypertension, and arrhythmias like RVOT tachycardia and Brugada syndrome)
04

Safety considerations

High risk of arrhythmia generationPost-surgical structural and functional complications (e.g., following repair of tetralogy of Fallot), including pulmonary insufficiency and right ventricular dysfunction
