Ring finger protein 138 pseudogene 2 (RNF138P2) is a genomic DNA segment in humans that resembles the protein-coding gene Ring finger protein 138 (RNF138), which encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in DNA damage response and repair. RNF138P2 itself is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not produce a functional protein due to disabling mutations and/or missing regulatory sequences. While most pseudogenes were historically viewed as nonfunctional "junk DNA," some recent studies have indicated that transcribed pseudogenes may play regulatory roles through noncoding RNA pathways, such as modulating microRNA activity or generating short interfering RNAs. However, there is currently no published evidence that RNF138P2 is therapeutically actionable, functionally relevant in disease, or useful as a biomarker. The true drug target is RNF138, not this pseudogene variant.
