RN7SKP81 is a human pseudogene corresponding to the functional small nuclear RNA gene RN7SK, which encodes a non-coding RNA that regulates the positive transcription elongation factor P-TEFb as part of the 7SK snRNP complex. Pseudogenes like RN7SKP81 are generally nonfunctional genomic loci that resemble functional genes but lack coding potential; RN7SKP81 does not produce a functional snRNA or protein and therefore does not participate in cellular processes such as transcription regulation performed by the canonical RN7SK snRNA. There are hundreds of RN7SK pseudogenes in the human genome, but only the bona fide RN7SK gene (not RN7SKP81) has characterized roles in transcription regulation, disease, and as part of ribonucleoprotein complexes.
