RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 391 (RNA5SP391) is a processed rRNA pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene via reverse transcription and genomic integration[1][2][6]. It lacks the ability to code for a functional 5S ribosomal RNA molecule, typically missing regulatory elements and containing disabling mutations. Pseudogenes in general were once considered "junk DNA," but some are now known to play roles in gene regulation and disease, including as potential competing endogenous RNAs or long non-coding RNAs[2][4]. For RNA5SP391, there is no evidence of functional protein or direct therapeutic targeting. In large-scale transcriptomic studies, expression of rRNA pseudogenes can sometimes distinguish cancer subtypes, but this is not specific to RNA5SP391[4]. No known drugs target RNA5SP391, and it is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, transporter, or enzyme[1][2][6].
