Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 44 (RNA5SP44) is a processed pseudogene that resembles the gene encoding 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) but does not code for a functional product[2][4][7]. It is located on human chromosome 1 (chr1:39154164-39154296)[2][4]. Pseudogenes are defective genomic copies of functional genes, usually arising by duplication or retrotransposition, and typically accumulate disabling mutations that prevent them from being transcribed or translated into functional RNA or protein[1][3][5]. Most 5S rRNA pseudogenes, including RNA5SP44, are not transcribed or functional in ribosome biogenesis, and the gene product is not known to interact with drugs or play a therapeutic role. Although some pseudogenes can act as sources of regulatory RNAs, there is no evidence that RNA5SP44 has such roles[5][7][8]. Thus, it is not considered a therapeutic target, and it is not relevant for drug development or biomarker use. Furthermore, its status as a pseudogene means it is not a gene or receptor in the classical, actionable sense and should not be considered a standard target for biomedical research or drug intervention. RNA5SP44 is sometimes confused with other similar entities because "5S ribosomal pseudogenes" are numerous and highly redundant in the human genome, often only annotated for genomic mapping or evolutionary studies[4][7].

Biological functions

likely noneas a 5S rRNA pseudogene, it is presumed non-functional, but some pseudogenes may have regulatory RNA roles such as competing for miRNAs, producing endogenous siRNAs, or acting as long non-coding RNAs in rare cases

Disease associations

other (pseudogenes can sometimes regulate parental genes and be implicated in disease, but no specific disease is linked to RNA5SP44)
