Overview

RNU1-28P, or RNA, U1 small nuclear 28, pseudogene, is an annotated pseudogene related to the family of U1 snRNAs, which are essential RNA components of the spliceosome complex. While canonical U1 snRNA genes encode the 164-nucleotide RNA involved in defining the 5' splice site during mRNA splicing, RNU1-28P does not encode a functional transcript for use in classical splicing and is located at chromosome 14q13. Some U1 pseudogenes, historically considered non-functional, have been shown to be transcriptionally active and could have RNA-mediated regulatory roles, such as influencing pre-mRNA 3′ end processing in specific cell types. However, RNU1-28P itself is generally not regarded as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and there is no evidence for disease linkage or drug interaction. It is primarily relevant as an example of persistent, expressed pseudogenes in the human genome, contributing to the complexity of non-coding RNA biology.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; no known therapeutic interactions

03

Biological functions

Possible RNA-based regulatory function (some variant U1 pseudogenes are transcriptionally active, may influence pre-mRNA processing at the level of 3' end formation in a subset of genes, but not typical spliceosomal function)May generate processed variant snRNA transcripts that are incorporated in ribonucleoprotein complexesOther
04

Disease associations

No well-established direct disease associations for RNU1-28PVariant U1 snRNA loci (including RNU1-28P) can exhibit somatic mutations, with possible relevance to regulatory RNA biology, but not clearly tied to specific diseasesOther

Safety considerations

None reported or anticipated due to its non-coding, pseudogene status
