Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 120 (RNA5SP120) is a genomic DNA sequence in humans that closely resembles the functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene but has lost its ability to produce a functional RNA due to accumulated mutations and lack of necessary regulatory elements[2][4][6][8]. Classified as a processed pseudogene, RNA5SP120 arose by reverse transcription of 5S rRNA mRNA and subsequent integration into the genome, typically lacking introns and regulatory sequences necessary for transcription[6][8]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP120 are distinct from functional genes and protein-coding genes, do not form part of ribosomes, and generally do not contribute to normal cellular or ribosomal functions. While some pseudogenes in the human genome have regulatory roles or are implicated as disease biomarkers, there is no evidence or description for RNA5SP120 having such a function[7][10][4]. The entry is mostly relevant for genomic annotation and phylogenetic studies, but lacks biological activity and should not be considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or traditional therapeutic target.
