RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 176 (RNA5SP176) is classified as a pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[2][9][4]. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are nonfunctional; they usually arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition and typically do not encode functional products[8][4]. The original 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) is a structural and functional component of the ribosome that participates in protein synthesis as part of the large ribosomal subunit[1][3][7]. However, as a pseudogene, RNA5SP176 lacks the ability to produce a functional 5S rRNA molecule and does not have a defined biological function or role in disease[4][8]. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor is it known to interact with drugs or serve as a biomarker for therapy[2][9]. The presence of such pseudogenes is common in eukaryotic genomes and reflects evolutionary processes[8].
