RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 195 (RNA5SP195) is a human pseudogene sequence that is highly similar to 5S ribosomal RNA genes but lacks the capacity to encode a functional 5S rRNA molecule[2][7][8]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP195 do not contribute to the ribosome’s structure or function and are generally considered molecular fossils—remnants of once-functional genes that have accumulated disabling mutations and are transcriptionally silent, or at best, produce non-functional RNA transcripts[7][8][2]. Unlike true 5S rRNA genes, which are essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis[1][3], this pseudogene does not participate in those processes. While pseudogene expression can occasionally be detected in certain contexts and has been studied in cancer for non-coding RNA regulatory potential, there is no established function, disease linkage, drug interaction, or biomarker usage for RNA5SP195[10]. This target is correctly named; however, as a pseudogene, it is not a molecular target for therapeutic intervention and plays no known active role in cellular biology.
