Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 216 (abbreviated as RNA5SP216, also known as RN5S216) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome. It retains sequence similarity to the gene encoding 5S ribosomal RNA, a fundamental structural and functional component of the ribosome, but, as a pseudogene, it is generally considered non-coding and does not produce a functional ribosomal RNA molecule or protein. Most pseudogenes like RNA5SP216 arise by retrotransposition — the insertion of reverse-transcribed gene sequences back into the genome — and are transcriptionally silent or only sporadically transcribed without producing active gene products. There is no current evidence that RNA5SP216 acts as a functional RNA or is directly involved in human disease, drug targeting, or therapy. RNA5SP216 is logged as a "pseudogene" by GeneCards, with official identifiers in HGNC, NCBI, and Ensembl. Processed pseudogenes originate from mRNA retrotransposition and typically do not encode functional proteins or RNAs. No scientific evidence links RNA5SP216 to functional ribosomal activity, disease, or therapeutic targeting either directly or indirectly. In summary, RNA5SP216 is a pseudogene, not an active therapeutic target, drug receptor, or clinically actionable gene. It is best understood as a non-functional genomic relic arising from the retrotransposition of a 5S ribosomal RNA gene copy.

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; as a non-functional pseudogene, it has no known drug mechanism of action.

03

Biological functions

Not known to perform a specific biological function (as a pseudogene, it does not produce a functional ribosomal RNA molecule or protein. While pseudogenes can sometimes regulate gene expression, RNA5SP216 is not known to do so).
04

Disease associations

No established direct link to any disease
