RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 220 (RNA5SP220) is a processed pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene[2]. Unlike 5S rRNA, which is an essential structural and functional component of the large ribosomal subunit in all domains of life[5][7][1], RNA5SP220 has lost its protein-coding capacity due to mutations or loss of regulatory elements, and does not contribute to ribosome structure or function. Pseudogenes may occasionally affect the expression of their parent genes at the RNA level, for example by acting as antisense transcripts or through competition with regulatory factors, but there is no evidence that RNA5SP220 performs any known regulatory or biological function[4]. Pseudogenes are generally not considered therapeutic targets because they do not encode functional proteins or participate directly in canonical signaling, metabolic, or regulatory pathways[4][6][8].
