Target intelligence / Profile preview
RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 255 is a human genomic pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family, annotated as “rRNA_pseudogene” or “processed pseudogene” in genomic databases[2][4][6]. The canonical functional 5S rRNA gene encodes a 120-nucleotide RNA that is an integral part of the ribosome’s large subunit, important for ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis[1][3][5]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP255 typically arise by retrotransposition or duplication followed by mutation, rendering them nonfunctional. They lack the sequence constraints and regulatory elements necessary for normal transcription and biogenesis, and do not participate in ribosome function[4][6]. Although some pseudogenes in the genome may be transcribed and could play roles in regulation (e.g., as competitive endogenous RNAs or antisense modulators), there is no evidence in the literature or annotation databases for RNA5SP255 having such regulatory or disease-related roles[6]. This locus is cataloged for genomic completeness, phylogenetics, and possibly regulatory study, but is not relevant as a “target” for therapy, drug development, or biomarker application.
