RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 283 (RNA5SP283) is a processed pseudogene: a non-functional DNA segment resembling a ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, specifically a 5S rRNA gene, resulting from retrotransposition or duplication events. Unlike the canonical 5S rRNA, which is a structural and functional RNA essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis in cells[1][3][5], RNA5SP283 does not produce a functional RNA and lacks known biological activity or clinical relevance. While some pseudogenes occasionally affect gene regulation or chromatin architecture, no such function has been reported or annotated for RNA5SP283[4]. It is considered a part of the genomic background and is relevant primarily for studies of genome structure, evolution, and annotation, not as a therapeutic target.
