Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 29 (RNA5SP29) is a non-coding RNA classified as an rRNA pseudogene, specifically a non-functional genomic copy similar to the gene encoding 5S ribosomal RNA[2][4][7]. Unlike functional 5S rRNA genes, which encode a highly conserved component of the large ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis[1][3][5], pseudogenes like RNA5SP29 are genetic relics and are not transcribed into functional RNA molecules[4][7]. These arise from gene duplication events but have since accumulated mutations or deletions, losing their coding potential and regulatory sequences required for proper expression[7]. While pseudogenes are not conventional therapeutic targets, some recent research suggests differential pseudogene expression may serve as biomarkers in cancer and might participate in gene regulation through mechanisms such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs or miRNA decoys[6]. However, there are no currently validated disease mechanisms, drugs, or therapies that specifically target RNA5SP29.
