RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 308 (RNA5SP308) is a processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP308 are the product of evolutionary gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically lack the ability to encode a functional RNA or protein due to disruptive mutations and absence of regulatory sequences. The canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is about 120 nucleotides long and structurally essential for the large ribosomal subunit, but RNA5SP308 itself does not play a direct role in ribosomal function or cellular biochemistry. While pseudogenes have been studied for potential roles in gene regulation and as noncoding RNAs in certain diseases—such as cancer—there is currently no specific evidence that RNA5SP308 acts as a therapeutic target or functional biomarker. Thus, RNA5SP308 should not be considered a therapeutic target or receptor, and is more properly classified as a non-functional, processed pseudogene in humans.
