RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 309 (RNA5SP309) is a genomic sequence that shares homology with 5S ribosomal RNA genes but has lost its coding or regulatory capacity to produce functional RNA due to mutational inactivation[2][4]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP309 are often remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events and may lack introns or possess disabling mutations[4]. While canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is a structural component of ribosomal large subunits essential for protein synthesis[1][5], pseudogenes such as RNA5SP309 do not encode functional ribosomal RNA and thus do not directly participate in ribosome assembly or function[2][4]. Broadly, some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles at the RNA level (for example, affecting gene regulation in cancer through competing endogenous RNA mechanisms), but there is no evidence that RNA5SP309 itself is a therapeutic target or directly involved in disease outside of its role as a potential biomarker for expression profiling[6].
