RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 331 (RNA5SP331) is a human gene locus annotated as a pseudogene that is similar in sequence to the functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene but does not encode an active, functional RNA molecule[2][4][8][7][6]. Pseudogenes typically arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition and accumulate disabling mutations, which prevent them from being transcribed or translated into functional RNA or proteins[10][6]. While some pseudogenes may have regulatory effects on gene expression or act as sources for small RNAs, there is no evidence currently that RNA5SP331 gives rise to such functions. It is not known to play any role in disease, cellular processes, or as a therapeutic target.
