RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 338 is a processed pseudogene arising from ancestral duplication or retrotransposition of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene[2][6]. Pseudogenes of rRNAs do not code for functional RNA or protein, and are typically considered "genomic fossils" lacking a defined biological role in ribosome assembly or cell physiology. While the functional 5S rRNA plays a crucial structural and informational role within the large ribosomal subunit[1][3][5], pseudogenes such as RNA5SP338 are not incorporated into ribosomes and usually lack transcriptional activity. However, emerging evidence suggests that, on a population level, pseudogene transcription profiles (not for this specific gene) may serve as cancer biomarkers or have regulatory roles in some disease contexts[4]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP338 is a therapeutic target, acts as a receptor or enzyme, or has any established functional or pathological activity.
