Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 342 (RNA5SP342) is a non-coding, processed rRNA pseudogene found in the human genome[8][10][2]. It is homologous to the functional 5S ribosomal RNA sequence but contains mutations or sequence disruptions that prevent it from encoding a functional 5S rRNA molecule. Like other pseudogenes, it is generally considered inactive and does not contribute to ribosomal structure or function. Unlike canonical 5S rRNA genes, RNA5SP342 does not participate in ribosome assembly, protein synthesis, or cellular signaling[1][3][15]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP342 is implicated in disease, therapeutic targeting, or diagnostic applications. Most genomic databases annotate RNA5SP342 and similar pseudogenes for completeness of genome coverage and evolutionary studies, and not because they have established biological or clinical roles[8][10][2][4].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. No drugs target RNA5SP342 or similar rRNA pseudogenes.

03

Biological functions

None established for RNA5SP342 specifically; pseudogenes in general do not typically produce functional gene products, though some pseudogenes may act as regulators of gene expression through mechanisms such as miRNA sponging or RNA binding protein sequestration[4].In rare cases, transcripts from 5S rRNA pseudogenes have been associated with modulation of immune responses, such as interferon production, but such observations are not established for RNA5SP342 specifically[6].
04

Disease associations

None established for RNA5SP342 directly[8][10]; however, some pseudogenes have been linked to regulatory roles in cancer and immunity broadly[4].No evidence that RNA5SP342 itself acts as a disease biomarker, contributor, or therapeutic target.
