Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 35 (RNA5SP35) is a pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. The canonical 5S rRNA is a small, highly conserved RNA molecule that forms part of the large ribosomal subunit, playing a critical structural and functional role in the ribosome[1][5]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP35, however, are non-functional genomic elements resulting from the duplication and subsequent mutation of functional 5S rRNA genes. They are typically not transcribed or, if transcribed, do not produce functional rRNAs or proteins. There is no evidence of direct involvement of RNA5SP35 in cellular pathways, drug interactions, or disease, and it is not considered a therapeutic target[2][8]. In rare circumstances, some 5S rRNA pseudogenes may be transcribed as non-coding RNAs with potential regulatory roles[8], but for RNA5SP35, functional roles have not been identified.

Biological functions

Not known to have direct biological functionSome pseudogenes, especially 5S rRNA pseudogenes, can be transcribed and might act as regulatory RNAs (for example, as microRNA decoys or sources of small interfering RNAs) in rare casesMajority are functionless byproducts of evolution (so-called “junk DNA”), though rare regulatory functions are increasingly recognized

Disease associations

OtherDysregulation of pseudogenes has been observed in cancer and other diseases in some contexts, often indirectly by modulating other gene expression, but there is no evidence for functional disease association specifically for RNA5SP35
