Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 359 (RNA5SP359) is a human pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[2][3]. Pseudogenes are defective gene copies that have lost their ability to code for functional RNA or protein, usually due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements[3]. The canonical, functional 5S ribosomal RNA is a short (about 120 nucleotides) non-coding RNA that is a vital structural and functional component of the ribosome, necessary for protein synthesis in all life domains except some mitochondria[1][5]. However, RNA5SP359 does not produce a functional 5S rRNA molecule and is not known to be transcribed into a stable RNA or protein product. Pseudogenes as a class can occasionally act as regulatory RNAs or affect gene expression, and global pseudogene expression profiles have been explored as biomarkers and molecular classifiers in cancer biology[6]. There is currently no evidence that RNA5SP359 has a known function, disease association, or utility as a drug target or biomarker.
