RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 399 (RNA5SP399) is a processed pseudogene belonging to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family in humans[5][3][6]. Pseudogenes are defective relatives of genes that have lost their ability to encode functional RNA or protein, typically due to mutations or truncations[2][10]. The 5S ribosomal RNA gene family codes for a component of the large ribosomal subunit essential for ribosome structure and function in protein synthesis in all domains of life[1][9], but pseudogenes like RNA5SP399 do not contribute to ribosome biogenesis or function[2][4][6]. There is no evidence that this pseudogene produces a functional RNA transcript, nor does it act as an independent regulator or functional molecule in disease. While global pseudogene expression patterns can have potential associations with cancer or regulatory roles via RNA network effects, there is no specific evidence supporting a role for RNA5SP399 in cancer, disease, or as a drug target[8].
