Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 40 (RNA5SP40) is a pseudogene related to ribosomal 5S RNA, classified as a non-coding RNA gene that has lost its ability to code for a functional product[2][5][6]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP40 often arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition, but accumulate disabling mutations over evolutionary time and are considered non-functional "genomic fossils" or "junk DNA"[8]. In some cases, pseudogenes are transcribed, and a subset may participate in regulatory processes such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs or lncRNAs, but for most ribosomal RNA pseudogenes—including RNA5SP40—such functions are generally unproven or absent[3][7]. While global pseudogene expression patterns are increasingly studied for potential utility in cancer subtyping or prognosis, there is no evidence that RNA5SP40 itself is a disease driver, drug target, or biomarker[7]. It is neither a therapeutic target (such as receptor, enzyme, ion channel, or transporter), nor a functional protein-coding gene[2][5][6][8].

Other names
RN5S40RNA, 5S ribosomal 40RNA5SP40
02

Biological functions

None (no confirmed biological function; generally considered non-functional, sometimes used as lncRNA research controls or possible RNA-level regulatory elements)
03

Disease associations

Other (There is ongoing research regarding possible roles in cancer subtyping via pseudogene expression; however, RNA5SP40 itself is not established as having a direct role)
04

Biomarkers

Pseudogene expression (general) has been associated with cancer subtype classification and prognosis, but RNA5SP40 specifically is not documented as a biomarker
