RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 401 is a processed pseudogene derived from 5S ribosomal RNA. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences related to functional genes but containing defects (such as mutations, truncations, or loss of regulatory elements) that prevent normal expression or protein-coding capability[4][8][10]. The parental 5S rRNA is a highly conserved structural RNA, essential for ribosome function, but RNA5SP401 itself is not transcribed into functional RNA and does not participate in ribosome structure or cellular processes. Processed pseudogenes, such as RNA5SP401, typically arise through retrotransposition events and are characterized by the absence of introns and random genomic integration[4][8]. While some pseudogenes can influence gene expression through miRNA sequestration or epigenetic effects in disease contexts, there is currently no evidence that RNA5SP401 plays any such role[4][6].
