RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 456 (RNA5SP456)

Target
RNA5SP456
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA pseudogene, Ribosomal RNA pseudogene
01

Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 456 is classified as a *pseudogene*, meaning it is a non-functional copy of a gene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[1]. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically do not code for functional RNAs or proteins due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements[2][6]. The functional 5S ribosomal RNA is an approximately 120-nucleotide molecule that is a structural component of the large ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, but pseudogenes such as RNA5SP456 are generally considered “dead” copies and do not contribute directly to ribosome function[3][1]. Recent advances show some pseudogenes may be transcribed and compete for RNA-binding proteins, sometimes affecting the regulation of their parental gene, but such functions require experimental validation for each pseudogene and are rare exceptions[2]. No direct evidence supports an active biological or disease-related role for RNA5SP456.

Biological functions

No known active biological function (as a pseudogene)May participate in regulatory networks by sequence similarity competition with its functional counterpart under specific conditions
03

Disease associations

Not established; pseudogenes in general have been implicated in regulatory processes and in rare cases correlate with disease but no specific role has been reported for this entry
