Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 499 (RNA5SP499) is a non-functional, non-coding region of the human genome formed by duplication or retrotransposition of the canonical 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Unlike 5S rRNA, which is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, RNA5SP499 is classified as a pseudogene: a sequence with high similarity to 5S rRNA but disrupted by mutations so that it does not produce functional rRNA or protein. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP499 are not considered drug targets, receptors, or enzymes, and have no known direct therapeutic relevance. While some pseudogenes in general may play regulatory roles in gene expression by acting as RNA decoys or through interaction with RNA-binding proteins, there is no evidence that RNA5SP499 is functionally transcribed or involved in disease processes.
