RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 509 (RNA5SP509) is an rRNA pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family, identifiable within the genome by sequence similarity but not encoding a functional RNA molecule. Pseudogenes are divided into several types (unitary, unprocessed/duplicated, processed); rRNA pseudogenes like RNA5SP509 typically result from mutations or errors in DNA duplication or retrotransposition that render them transcriptionally or functionally silent. While 5S ribosomal RNA molecules play key roles in ribosome assembly and protein synthesis, pseudogene relatives such as RNA5SP509 are generally nonfunctional. In rare circumstances, some pseudogenes are transcribed and may modulate the expression of other genes through regulatory networks, but there is no evidence for specific biological roles or clinical relevance of RNA5SP509 itself.
