Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 520 (RNA5SP520) is a processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[5][4]. Unlike functional 5S rRNA, which is a component of the large ribosomal subunit and crucial to protein synthesis[1][3], this pseudogene does not code for functional RNA or protein due to disabling mutations or loss of regulatory elements acquired during its evolutionary history[2][4]. Processed pseudogenes, such as RNA5SP520, are typically generated by reverse transcription of an RNA transcript followed by integration into a new genomic locus, lacking introns and functional promoters[2][4]. While there is growing evidence that pseudogenes as a class may exert regulatory effects—such as acting as decoys for miRNAs or by affecting the expression of their cognate parental genes in cancer and other contexts—there are no specific data implicating RNA5SP520 in these roles or as a biomarker or therapeutic target in any disease context to date[6]. It should not be considered a drug target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical therapeutic target family member.

Mechanism of action

None known (not a drug target)

03

Biological functions

None established for the pseudogene itself; parental 5S rRNA is involved in ribosome structure and functionPseudogenes may have regulatory roles at the RNA level in some contexts
04

Disease associations

No direct disease role known for RNA5SP520; pseudogenes in general can participate in gene regulation and may be used as biomarkers in cancer classification, but individual evidence for this pseudogene is lacking
