Target intelligence / Profile preview
RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 76 (RNA5SP76) is a pseudogene corresponding to 5S ribosomal RNA but is not itself functionally transcribed into an active ribosomal RNA component[2][8]. RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 76 represents a pseudogene derived from the ancestral or functional 5S rRNA gene locus. The 5S rRNA gene normally encodes a structural RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit critical for protein synthesis[3][5][6][7]; however, RNA5SP76 itself is annotated as a pseudogene and is not transcribed into a functional rRNA or ribosomal component in the mature ribosome[2][8]. Pseudogenes, including those of the ribosomal RNA gene families, accumulate throughout the genome as non-functional, often non-transcribed copies derived from functional rRNA loci[8]. Whereas some pseudogenes can yield noncoding transcripts with regulatory properties, there is no specific evidence that RNA5SP76 is functionally transcribed or involved in any regulatory or disease process[2][4]. Therefore, RNA5SP76 is not a therapeutically actionable target or conventional molecular entity (such as receptor, enzyme, or transporter). Its classification as a pseudogene means it is not a valid therapeutic target[2][8]. If looking for information relevant to active ribosomal 5S rRNA, refer instead to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene (not the pseudogenes).
