Overview

RN7SKP291 is a predicted pseudogene related to the "RNA, 7SK small nuclear" (RN7SK), which encodes a non-coding RNA that functions as a scaffold component of the 7SK small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP). The canonical RN7SK snRNA negatively regulates transcription elongation by RNA polymerase II and is implicated as a regulator in cell differentiation, development, and disease. However, pseudogenes, by definition, are gene copies that are generally non-functional and do not produce functional RNAs or proteins. Most such snRNA pseudogenes are presumed to be unexpressed and have no characterized function or disease association. There is currently no evidence that RN7SKP291 is expressed, functions as a therapeutic target, participates in any biological processes, interacts with drugs, or serves as a biomarker. Standard genomic nomenclature treats pseudogenes as distinct from the main locus (RN7SK), from which all well-characterized functions derive. If the intent was to refer to a functional target, the correct name would be RNA, 7SK small nuclear (RN7SK) or simply 7SK RNA, which is a well-studied non-coding RNA scaffold, not a pseudogene. If functional/therapeutic information is required, the canonical gene RN7SK should be referenced, not RN7SK pseudogene 291.
