Overview

RN7SL173P is a human genomic pseudogene derived from the 7SL RNA gene, which is a component of the signal recognition particle (SRP) complex. Unlike the ~4 functional 7SL RNA genes, RN7SL173P and hundreds of similar copies in the human genome are non-functional, typically due to truncations or accumulated mutations, and do not produce functional RNA for SRP assembly. 7SL RNA is vital for cotranslational targeting of proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum, but the pseudogenes (like RN7SL173P) do not contribute to this function and are considered genomic fossils, though the possibility for some transcript-level regulatory activity exists in principle as seen with other pseudogenes.

Biological functions

No direct coding or canonical functionMay participate in regulation of gene expression via RNA competition or sequence similarity effects typical of pseudogenes
03

Disease associations

No direct evidence for RN7SL173P specificallySome pseudogenes can act as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or miRNA decoys, influencing cancer and other diseases; such roles are locus-specific and unconfirmed for RN7SL173P
