RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 377, pseudogene (RN7SL377P) is a human gene annotated as a pseudogene related to the 7SL RNA family, specifically to the canonical 7SL RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP)[4][7]. The SRP is a ribonucleoprotein complex central to protein targeting within cells, but pseudogenes such as RN7SL377P do not encode functional RNA molecules[4][7]. RN7SL377P is a member of a large family of 7SL-related pseudogenes found in the human genome[4][7]. The canonical 7SL RNA forms a critical part of the signal recognition particle (SRP), which directs secretory and membrane protein targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum[3][5][6]. However, the vast majority of human 7SL loci are pseudogenes, including RN7SL377P, which arose via retrotransposition and are typically truncated, nonfunctional RNA sequences that do not encode proteins or have regulatory activity[4][7]. These pseudogenes are considered evolutionary remnants and are not involved in signal transduction or other cellular pathways[4][7]. The full-length 7SL RNA gene is functional in SRP biology, protein targeting, and has regulatory actions implicated in cancer and viral infection[3][5]. Pseudogenes derived from 7SL RNA, like RN7SL377P, are generally transcriptionally inactive and lack direct biological function[4][7]. Structural studies show pseudogene loci are typically truncated versions of the 7SL RNA sequence, possibly originating from reverse flow of genetic information from RNA to DNA[4][7].
