Overview

RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 580, pseudogene (RN7SL580P) is a non-protein-coding RNA locus classified as a pseudogene. It is a sequence in the human genome similar to the functional 7SL RNA gene, which encodes the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP) that guides nascent secretory proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum. Pseudogenes such as RN7SL580P arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events: they resemble the parent gene in sequence but typically lack the regulatory elements or structural integrity to be actively transcribed or translated into functional products[5][7][10]. The human genome contains several hundred copies of 7SL RNA-like sequences, the majority of which are pseudogenes generated by reverse transcription and subsequent genomic integration[5][7][10]. Some transcribed pseudogene RNAs can, in general, act as miRNA decoys or compete with their parent gene RNA for regulatory factors, but there is currently no known function or therapeutic relevance for RN7SL580P specifically[2][4]. Note on function and classification: Although some pseudogenes may produce RNAs that have regulatory roles (for example, by acting as miRNA sponges or regulators of their parent gene expression), most, including RN7SL580P, are considered non-functional genetic remnants; they do not code for proteins, nor do they catalyze reactions, mediate signal transduction, or serve as receptors[5][7][10].
