It is not a functional protein-coding gene, but rather a non-functional, truncated copy of the 7SL RNA gene, most likely produced by reverse transcription and integration of 7SL RNA-derived sequences into the genome[3]. RN7SL7P is a pseudogene derived from the 7SL RNA gene, which encodes the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP) involved in co-translational targeting of proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum[2]. Functional 7SL RNA genes include RN7SL1, RN7SL2, and RN7SL3, but RN7SL7P is not among these and does not participate in SRP activity or protein targeting. The proliferation of 7SL pseudogenes in the genome is a result of reverse transcription and insertion events throughout evolution[3].
