RNA, 7SL, cytoplasmic 97, pseudogene (RN7SL97P) is a human pseudogene related to the functional 7SL RNA gene, which encodes the RNA component of the signal recognition particle (SRP). Pseudogenes are genetic elements that resemble known genes but are generally nonfunctional due to mutations or lack of regulatory features. RN7SL97P, like other 7SL pseudogenes, arose from sequences related to the 7SL RNA through retrotransposition and does not encode for a functional product or have a defined biological role. The functional SRP 7SL RNA is crucial for co-translational protein targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum; however, the pseudogene copies do not participate in this process. There are hundreds of 7SL RNA pseudogenes scattered in the human genome, but most—like RN7SL97P—are nonfunctional, not expressed, and have no direct links to disease or therapeutic intervention.
