Overview

RNA, U1 small nuclear 39, pseudogene (RNU1-39P) is a human genomic locus classified as a pseudogene of U1 small nuclear RNA. Pseudogenes are non-functional copies or remnants of genes, often arising by duplication or retrotransposition, that have lost their capacity to code for a functional product. RNU1-39P resembles genuine U1 snRNA genes, which are essential snRNA components of the spliceosome and play a key role in the splicing of pre-mRNA[1][4][6]. Unlike canonical U1 snRNA genes, RNU1-39P carries mutations or truncations that render it non-functional as an RNA molecule involved directly in splicing[4][6]. Most pseudogenes, traditionally considered "junk DNA," have more recently been shown to exert various regulatory roles at the DNA and RNA level, including affecting gene expression through siRNA production, miRNA decoy activity, or epigenetic mechanisms[2]. However, RNU1-39P does not code for a therapeutic target, enzyme, receptor, or similar drug-actionable entity, nor is there evidence of it interacting with drugs or being directly exploited in therapy[4][6]. No direct biomarker roles, safety concerns, or targeted mechanisms of action are reported for this locus.
