Overview

RNA, U4 small nuclear 17, pseudogene (RNU4-17P) is a pseudogene located at cytogenetic region 18q21.32 on chromosome 18 and is classified as a small nuclear RNA pseudogene. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein or active non-coding RNA product and, therefore, does not participate in known cellular or biological processes. It is not recognized as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene, and there are no known drugs, biological functions, or disease associations linked to it. The RNU4-17P sequence shows homology with functional U4 small nuclear RNA genes, which participate in the spliceosome complex, but RNU4-17P itself is not functional due to its classification as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes such as this are generally considered non-functional genomic elements that have lost their gene expression capability and/or protein-coding potential, often due to mutations or sequence alterations. Functional U4 small nuclear RNAs are critical in the splicing of pre-mRNA as part of the major spliceosome, but this does not apply to RNU4-17P.
